It Is Time to Save Lives
How Weapon Recognition Can and Should Save Lives
Part 4 of Our 4 Part Series on Security Technologies We’re Testing for 2021
Our modern times are filled with a vast array of incredible advancements. Life is, in many ways, better than it has ever been before – a global pandemic not-withstanding. But with so much progress, we have also found some horrific trends in our culture, including ones with real preventable solutions. In this case, the mass shootings in America. Places like Newtown, Columbine, Las Vegas, and most recently Boulder, Colorado have entered the cultural (and security zeitgeist) in a tragic way. The events in Boulder this spring should reinvigorate every business leader with campus and retail responsibilities to take on this challenge together.
This need for better technological solutions that can help prevent and respond to mass shooters has been recognized though largely not implemented. Now, ZeroEyes is looking to step in to meet the rising challenge and bring many public and private spaces closer to a safer and more responsive state. We are partnering with them to raise the alarm and to help business leaders know there is much they can do to solve it.
LOOKING FOR SECURITY THREATS
Founded in part by ex-special forces operators, as well as security\technology consultants and programmers, ZeroEyes has created an AI which can identify a gun on a security camera feed then send a warning with a picture of the subject, their location, and the weapon they’re armed with, to onsite security personnel and local law enforcement.
ZeroEyes has fine-tuned its software to be able to identify a firearm and send the subsequent message in about three seconds. This incredible turn-around time means that not only does information get out sooner, but it also means security and police can pinpoint a suspect’s location (usually the hardest part of any active shooter situation) and can neutralize an active shooter more quickly, saving lives.
In terms of implementing their software, ZeroEyes has created their AI to be able to integrate with current security platforms – so it doesn’t require new hardware, which makes its accessibility hard to beat. And just like their response times, when the lives of students, customers, or civil servants are at stake, speed and ease of use are key.
Reopening to Duty of Care
As government officials begin to lift social distancing policies, it is reasonable to believe that increases in gun violence incidents will go with it. We have already see this in 2021. With public access to vaccines now underway, businesses must revisit their duty of care obligations to mitigate the risk of violence against employees and customers as much as possible. If your property is accessible to the public, is it is not only a potential target for gun violence, it also represents an expanded legal duty of care.
In tort law, duty of care is a legal obligation that is imposed on an individual, requiring adherence to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could foreseeably harm others. This means acting with all the caution, attention, and watchfulness that any reasonable person would use. In the business of security, it’s time to ask ourselves, isn’t investing in gun detection within the definition of reasonable? Particularly with Zero Eyes’ own research shows its ability to reduce risk of harm.
Of course, protecting visitors to your campus or facilities is enough impetus to do what needs to be done. But the legal requirements around duty of care take it one step further. Businesses that ignore their duty are exposed to the risk of legal action. It is time for us to realize that the standard of care for our employees, students, and visitors includes proven technologies to risk the impact of gun violence.
SEEING PROTECTION CLEARLY
As the world recovers from the pandemic that has driven us into our homes, and as children return to school, people to shopping malls, and employees to office spaces – there will be a continuing need for security deterrents and responses for those seeking to harm the helpless. Security integration must walk the fine line between prevention and response, able to handle both.
ZeroEyes gives integrators and their clients a platform upon which to perform this wire walk.
The right time for action is before harm is done. The right speed for this action is swift. At SAGE, we believe in helping our clients keep their employees and customers safe and giving them the confidence to respond quickly to any challenge that might come their way. That’s what it means to be the Tip Of The Spear.
